How to Knit for Absolute Beginners
Knitting is a great hobby that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a craft that can be used to create beautiful garments, accessories, and home decor items. Knitting is also a great way to relax and unwind after a long day. If you are an absolute beginner to knitting, this article will provide you with the basics of how to knit.
Gathering Supplies
The first step to learning how to knit is to gather the necessary supplies. You will need knitting needles, yarn, scissors, and a tapestry needle. Knitting needles come in a variety of sizes and materials, so it is important to choose the right size and material for your project. Yarn comes in a variety of colors and textures, so you can choose the yarn that best suits your project. Scissors are used to cut the yarn when you are finished with a project. A tapestry needle is used to weave in the ends of the yarn when you are finished with a project.
Learning the Basics
Once you have gathered the necessary supplies, it is time to learn the basics of knitting. The two basic stitches used in knitting are the knit stitch and the purl stitch. The knit stitch is created by inserting the right needle into the front of the stitch on the left needle, wrapping the yarn around the right needle, and pulling the yarn through the stitch. The purl stitch is created by inserting the right needle into the back of the stitch on the left needle, wrapping the yarn around the right needle, and pulling the yarn through the stitch.
Creating a Swatch
Once you have learned the basics of knitting, it is time to create a swatch. A swatch is a small piece of knitting that is used to practice the stitches and to measure the gauge of the knitting. To create a swatch, cast on a certain number of stitches (usually 20-30) and knit a few rows. Once you have knitted a few rows, measure the gauge of the knitting by counting the number of stitches and rows in a 4-inch square.
Creating a Project
Once you have mastered the basics of knitting and have created a swatch, it is time to create a project. Before you begin a project, it is important to read the pattern carefully and make sure that you understand all of the instructions. Once you have read the pattern, it is time to cast on the number of stitches specified in the pattern and begin knitting. As you knit, it is important to pay attention to the pattern and make sure that you are following the instructions correctly.
Finishing a Project
Once you have finished knitting the project, it is time to bind off the stitches. To bind off, knit two stitches, then pass the first stitch over the second stitch. Continue this process until all of the stitches have been bound off. Once the stitches have been bound off, it is time to weave in the ends of the yarn. To do this, use a tapestry needle to weave the ends of the yarn into the back of the knitting.

I am new to knitting let’s see where it goes and thank you for sharing this
You look like a knitting teacher I never knew how to knit until you came up on my phone and I knitted millions of stuff thank you for this you are amazing 😊
My mother crocheted and I would watch her furious hands trying to get the gyst of how she was doing it. It was mesmorizing. I figured out how to make extremely long chains, but nothiing else. Many years later I decided I needed a 6'x4' throw blanket, which is not size you can just pick up off the shelf. So I had to make it. I resorrted to Crocheting For Dummies 101 and a very long time later (years in fact) I had a very nice throw, exactly how I wanted it. Somewhere around 80,000 stitches… each one demanding my 100% focus because I could not for the life of me crochet without looking.
Knitting, on the other hand, seems to be an art that, when mastered, can be done to some extent by muscle memory and touch. Or so it appears. I was always puzzled as to how it was done without any hooks.
You seem to be quite talented not only at knitting, but also teaching So I thank you for that.
so I've been now working on this project for over an hour and here's my progress:
cast on ✓
knit stitch✓
knit rows ✓
cast off ✓
and I've successfully completed this project! i'm proud of myself; i made a little sample and it's so cute! I hope ill continue! thanks for the tutorial 🙂
the knit stitch went fine at first but gradually the loops on left got tight which made it difficult
the needle went through the yarn strand making the yarn strands messy
after that the worst part happened where all the loops came off the left needle; I barely managed to put it back
i'm on verge of crying
ever since i was a child i always wanted to learn knitting and crocheting; i brought my knitting needle set a long time ago (like 6 months ago) but just used it once
i'm currently 17 and i wanna reduce my screen time and find a hobby so I have decided to learn knitting! and then I'll follow up with crocheting hopefully I'll stay consistent this time 🙂
I'm using a 4 mm sized needle because the yarn i have is thin ; it's kinda difficult so i just hope that I'll stay patient and won't quit
I am just leaving how to knit .my stitches get so tight please help me
If I start with 18 cast on stitches, why do I have 19 k stitches when I begin the next row?
My mum and Nanna taught me to knit when I was about 9 (28 now). Never knew how to start, never knew how to finish, just knew how to do the rows. Feel like my mind has blown with being shown how to maybe complete something in the future
I’m 16 and just trying to learn. I only have massively chunky needles but I hope to get some like yours soon! For now I’m trying my best
Finally l found a video that is precise and and slow and very informative. Thank you
this was literally the only video out of many that I watched that worked for me, thank you so much!
What size needles?
You are a great teacher ❤
I noticed you are a truly good teacher with lots of patience and you make it much easier than to crochet. Congrats & thank you, have subscribed to your channel today plus for all your notifications.
I just found this channel! I've been crocheting for at least 20 years and wanted to learn to knit at age 50. This is so simple and enjoyed this tutorial! Thank you so much for making it that much easier for us to learn!
I can’t do it 😢
I’m 10 and I am really intrested in knitting after I’ve seen my sister do it (even if she doesn’t do it right) which I think she does but this really taught me some tips!
My son has ADHD and he just gave up bc you when to fast on the rounding
I’m just now trying to learn and watched this, I do have a question, how am I ending up with more loops than I started with? I cast on 15 and now all the sudden after many rows I have 19 loops. Can you tell me where I went wrong?

THANK U SO MUCH!!!!😍🥰😊
A wine rack, I'm knitting a wine rack. I figured why go for a scarf, I have plenty of those… I need a wine rack. Seriously, never thought about knitting until I saw this beautiful old French man on the Metro doing it, I asked what are you making, looking me dead in the eye he answered, "A dining room table." I love French humour. Your video was informative and pleasantly inviting… I just may do it.
I did it in just one attempt i just need to try cast off, when you understand it's really easy
Does it matter how you cast on?
It’s hard
This is the only video that’s been easy enough for me to follow with my attention problems 😭 thank you 💕
thank you so much
After watching so many videos and giving up on the knitting, this video helped me get into the flow of things and i’ve started my first knitting sample. Thanks so much
Am a complete beginner and I have tonsay your teaching is brilliant!!! You show everything well and slowly and explain things so well too. Thank you so much!!!!
Absolutely brilliant. Didn’t just show you how to do something once from an angle that didn’t help. They showed the whole making of it so you could see multiple times and from different angles
