Big Changes in My Homeschool: Why I Choose to Use Secular Curriculum Even Though I Am Christian
As a Christian homeschooling parent, I have faced a difficult decision when it comes to choosing a curriculum for my children. On the one hand, I want to provide them with a quality education that will prepare them for the future. On the other hand, I want to ensure that the curriculum I choose is in line with my Christian values. After much thought and prayer, I have decided to use a secular curriculum for my homeschool.
The decision to use a secular curriculum was not an easy one. I had to weigh the pros and cons of each option and consider how it would affect my children’s education. Ultimately, I decided that a secular curriculum would provide my children with the best educational opportunities.
One of the main reasons I chose to use a secular curriculum is because it allows my children to explore different perspectives and ideas. By exposing them to different worldviews, I am helping them to develop critical thinking skills and become more open-minded. This is important for their future success, as they will need to be able to think critically and objectively in order to succeed in the world.
Another reason I chose to use a secular curriculum is because it provides a more comprehensive education. Secular curriculums often cover a wide range of topics, from science and math to history and literature. This allows my children to gain a more well-rounded education, which will help them to be successful in whatever field they choose to pursue.
Finally, I chose to use a secular curriculum because it allows me to teach my children about Christianity in a more meaningful way. By using a secular curriculum, I can focus on teaching my children about the Bible and Christian values without having to worry about the curriculum being biased or one-sided. This allows me to provide my children with a more balanced education that will help them to develop a deeper understanding of their faith.
Overall, I believe that using a secular curriculum is the best choice for my homeschool. It allows my children to explore different perspectives and ideas, gain a more comprehensive education, and learn about Christianity in a meaningful way. I am confident that this decision will help my children to become successful and well-rounded individuals.

Love this! ❤❤❤I think that diverse content is so important in raising compassionate and empathic children. I am not religious but I agree with everything you said. I would never want my children to feel my beliefs are somehow greater than someone else’s.
This is spot on!!!! Bravo mana❤
I have followed your channel since your beginnings. Just like you we started homeschooling due the pandemic and are finishing our 3rd year of homeschooling. I absolutley agree about using secular curriculum, we too are a family of faith but I have found that secular curriculum is more sollid and inclusive to othe cultures. I have loved some religious curriculum but always felt like something was missing.
For some reason I’m a Christian and I’ve never been interested in Christian curriculum I always thought about my faith as something we do separately .. I don’t feel it has to be in every example and every assignment .. it’s part of how we live treat each other and who we are .. if anything most of them are outdated and aren’t diverse and multicultural enough
I enjoyed hearing your perspective. For me it’s the opposite. I want a strong, Christian foundation in our homeschool. We do discuss secular beliefs as well like evolution and we are Latino so they are aware of different cultures but I want God to be front and center in our homeschool. Children are exposed to a secular world views in pretty much everything; cartoons, movies, commercials, regular music, billboards etc. It seems in this current state of the world especially, as Christian’s we really need to be diligent in raising our babies in the faith.
So excited for you Brittany! You are blooming as a homeschool mama and it’s absolutely beautiful to witness. Check out the book Religion by DK, I use it for our homeschool and we love it and you may love it too! It explores soooo many different religions and beliefs as well as Christianity. ♥️
This is going to sound ridiculous, so feel free to laugh or roll your eyes at me, but until a few months ago I didn't know you were allowed to homeschool your children in the United States unless you claimed to be ultra Christian. I thought it was an actual State rule. That's how saturated the curricula out there seemed to someone on the outside looking in. And as a woman with a history degree, I have frustratingly spent 3 months piecing together a US and World History program for my daughter that wasn't strangely drenched in Bible verses or factually incorrect political messages. Homeschooling sometimes feels unaccepting of families like me who allow many religions and ideologies to be a part of our path. Interestingly, my daughter and I will be studying that in history as well: Christianity and the homeschool movement. It is clear Christianity played a pinnacle roll in the homeschool movement and that is something to recognize.
Great video Brittany. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
I see those bloopers😂😂
I do agree as reading through samples are so important so you get a feel of what is will be like.
I think its great u wanna share both sides of things like evolution snd creationism. Kids do need to know how to navigate a world where majority believes in evolution or other non biblical views. But as a parent and why we personally chose to homeschool is to be able to teach a biblical worldview and to teach that it's the right view. I dont need all subjects to be Christian like math for instance.
Alllllll of this!! Thank you for this video
Your videos are so nice for toddlers and parents!
Thank you so much for your videos!!
Love this video! We are also a Christian family using a lot of secular resources…for many of these reasons as well. But also because we use a charter and they cover secular and not religious materials.
Loved everything about this. Thank you for sharing.
Yes. Often times Christian History and Science curricula are found to be lacking. There are some things, we shouldn't be neutral on even more so because we are Christian. We use a mix of Christian and secular curricula in our home. Thankfully as homeschoolers, we can pick and choose parts of different resources to use.
I loved this video, thank you so much for sharing!! Have you ever looked into Build Your Library? Do you have thoughts on that curriculum?
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
All of this! We started using Christian curriculum the first year of our homeschool but have been finding we prefer more secular materials as well.
You articulated your thoughts on this topic very well 😊 thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this video! I agree 100%. We are believers too, but go the secular route because curriculum is usually more inclusive and accepting of diversity. I’ve found most Christian curriculum to be somewhere between so-so and incredibly problematic. It’s exciting and encouraging that the homeschool community is becoming more diverse. I hope more publishers will recognize that when creating new curriculum.
Loved this video! ❤ Very well said!
I feel so similarly with wanting to present both views and perspectives
A really agree with you and am thankful for you being willing to open up about your thoughts about this. My kids are beginning to enter High school and Middle school and I am feeling the same way.
I strongly agree as a first year homeschooling mom!
Girl, I feel this to my core. I am right there with you. Especially in the realms of science and history. I am Christian through and through. Ain’t nobody moving me off Jesus but I do feel that Christian curricula can often times come across as elitist 😬 To just dismiss other peoples, cultures and religions because they don’t believe as we do? Nah. That’s the opposite of love.
Another fantastic video! Thanks Brittany 😊
“I feel like a lot of curriculums have leaned more on diverse pictures but not diverse content” 👏🏾👏🏾Come on!!!! 👏🏾👏🏾 Say that again for the people in the back!!!! Yes!
Only you can set up the values and moral system of your home. You know what your babies need. I love how intentional and flexible you are. Very, very good.
I love this!! And I couldn't agree more with your statements. I was raised in faith and i got my bubble popped when I realised other cultures had different beliefs to which I was boxed into. Raising our kiddos with genuine love and diversity is more helpful to as they become adults ❤
Like you, when we started we relied heavily on Christian curriculum and now we are more mixed- supplementing with books and other things to for more diversity that allows our children to see themselves and or expose them to other cultures/contributions.
Ive had the inverse! 😅. I am technically secular but the way some secular programs do history and science is not good in my opinion. It over corrects, belittles, and treats theories as facts. So I’d rather start from the Christian perspective and discuss over to where I believe. Neutral seems to be a sweet spot for history for me. I’ve always added in different cultures into my read alouds since my child was little. I am mixed race and lived in many other countries so it just comes naturally.
This was great! I want my kids to know what is out in their world so that they can prepare to hold firm to their Faith when they are challenged. I don't want them in a bubble and we should be teaching them about the Bible not a curriculum. 🙂 Thank you for this ❣
Thank you ! I’m so thank you for your videos – which science program do you use
I just love you! We are a strong Christian family, and I have found the same issues with Christian based curriculum. I agree with you 100% and thank you for sharing this. ~Marlo
Totally agree with all that you've said. As a Jamaican homeschooler, I find that a lot of Christian curricula can be problematic, especially with history. Here, we are taught history from a neutral perspective since our country tries to embrace our motto of "Out of Many, One People". We are a country that is predominantly Christian, but all faiths/denominations/religions are here, and you are free to practice. The curriculum content as it relates to the Caribbean tends to focus on slavery and our people are so diverse and there are so many credible sources that can be used that would give a better picture. Nevertheless, I focus on critical thinking and teach my children age appropriate content, and then try to sprinkle a moral compass. Personally, I use a mix of Christian and secular, but I have to do a lot of research. I think you are on the right track. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Great video my daughter and I are still navigating what we will use for 6th grade. I am totally with you about exposing your children to more than Christian curriculums. It is good to see the world through a realistic lense and reality is we live in a very diverse world.
