How To Tell If Your Anxiety Is Treatment Resistant
Anxiety is a common mental health disorder that affects millions of people around the world. It can be debilitating and can interfere with daily life. Fortunately, there are treatments available to help manage anxiety. However, some people may find that their anxiety is resistant to treatment. This article will discuss how to tell if your anxiety is treatment resistant and what to do if it is.
The first step in determining if your anxiety is treatment resistant is to understand what treatment resistant anxiety is. Treatment resistant anxiety is when a person has tried multiple treatments for their anxiety, but none of them have been successful in reducing their symptoms. This can be frustrating and can lead to feelings of hopelessness.
The next step is to assess your current treatment plan. Are you taking medications for your anxiety? Are you seeing a therapist? Are you engaging in self-care activities such as exercise, yoga, or meditation? If you are not doing any of these things, it may be time to start. It is important to have a comprehensive treatment plan that includes both medication and therapy.
If you have been following your treatment plan and still find that your anxiety is not improving, it may be time to consider other options. It is possible that your anxiety is treatment resistant and that you need to try a different approach. This could include trying different medications, different types of therapy, or alternative treatments such as acupuncture or herbal remedies.
It is also important to consider the possibility that your anxiety is caused by an underlying medical condition. If this is the case, it is important to speak to your doctor about the possibility of treating the underlying condition. This could help to reduce your anxiety symptoms.
Finally, it is important to remember that treatment resistant anxiety is not a sign of failure. It is simply a sign that the current treatment plan is not working and that it may be time to try something different. It is important to stay positive and to keep trying different treatments until you find one that works for you.

I feel like the only thing that truly helps is exposure and response, along with actually wanting to change. No one can force you to change and it only works once you buy in.
I think some of these meds are rediculous.. So many say . Dont drive until you know how you will respond to ( XXX) .. So what..i cant go to work for days or a week plus , because its been deemed Unsafe to do so while trying these meds.. And if you DO drive and get into a accident.. and it was later found you were warned about this.. you better believe you are now legally liable for what just happened…….
🙁
It all depends on the type of anxiety, I have anxiety that happens due to my nerve compression of my brachial plexus each side in the thoracic outlet. Nothing helps that anxiety
Cannabis was highly effective for treating my anxiety and depression even without seeing a therapist. Unfortunately, I have lost access due to cost.
you are a God Send so glad i found your channel. thank you.
thank you for your video!
All therapy and anti depressants are scams none of them work
Dr. Tracey thank you for this video. This is exactly what I’m experiencing now. My anxiety is frustrating me to the point of me not being able to pass the driving road test. I feel like I’ve tried many options of medication for anxiety except Benzos and nothing has worked to calm my anxiety. Would it be feasible to make a video on feeling anxious when driving. It’s such a common issue.
I've been on lexapro for 15+ years. I definitely tell a difference when I've stopped or miss a few days. Should I still be on this?
What are your thoughts on rTMS for anxiety and or bi-polar? (Instead of medications)
Which is better for depression associated with anxiety and insomnia Amitriptyline or Prozac?
I am using amitriptyline 25 mg in the evening once, is it permissible to stop using amitriptyline 25 mg and use Prozac 20 mg directly? Or should amitriptyline be stopped gradually and then Prozac used?
Is it correct to use amitriptyline 25 mg in the morning and Prozac 20 mg in the evening?
I’m from England and had CBT around 10 years ago via our NHS. It was totally useless and put me off ever trying it again. Mental health help in the UK is well known for being pathetic. I have heard many others who feel the same.
EDMR for panic attacks; it's a nice distraction. Also, replacing intrusive thoughts by thinking very "loudly" "don't think" on repeat. And if all that fails, Lorazepam. I used to take it more often, but I rarely "need" it as often anymore. It slows the world down. Well, no, it mainly just slows me down, but it looks and feels like the medication slows the world to a more manageable speed.
A few weeks ago I experienced a moment of moderate happiness and motivation. I think it lasted maybe 20-30 seconds. Glorious times.
Effexor and Xanax. Both work amazingly well for about two months. But try getting off of them…….damn. You thought you had problems beforehand…..shiiit. Vigorous exercise and a correct diet are the first things that should be done before getting on any drugs. (NOT medical advice, just common sense advice)

Can i have muscle contractions from Serodeps ( escitalopram)? I am taking it for anxiety and depression for about 3 weeks. Thank You!
You are so smart and so relatable. You make people feel comfortable. I somehow feel heard, and I’ve not spoken a word. So grateful for all you do. 💜
I have non-respiratory unexpected panic attacks (unrelated to what happens around me; even sometimes when watching TV). Tried everything from medication to intensive CBT (multiple therapists). Altough the fear for anxiety reduced, the anxiety attacks did not. I am also diagnosed with level1 autism. Could there be other things I can do?
The sad part is the day you described is me everyday. Only a few days every few weeks do I feel not irritated and anxious. But every single medicine I've been on has given me horrible side effects; numb crotch, extreme restless leg syndrome, and so much more…
Dr Marks,
I had a question that I don’t know if you can help me with. I was on Zoloft for 11 years and it worked great. I was anxiety free and I never felt better. Unfortunately the Zoloft pooped out and stopped working. Since then I have tried an increase in Zoloft eventually maxing it out which did nothing. I then went to Pristiq then Lexapro and both made me feel more nervous, caused panic attacks and feel agitated I am getting very frustrated and feeling hopeless that I will find a medicine that will work. Is it possible to be so receptive to antidepressants then all of a sudden have absolutely nothing work, like be totally resistant to all SSRI’s? Can you just wake up one day and boom your brain changed in such a wat that no antidepressant will work? In the past no matter what anti depressant I took it worked and it usually worked on the lowest dose. The doctor just put me on Paxil we will see what happens with that I guess.
I hated CBT therapy, it feels like I was paying a friend just to talk to, and I need to heal some serious shit.
I'm studying counselling psychology, and I've been on the patient side of therapy and psychiatry for just over a decade. One thing that confuses me about psychiatry is the disconnect between patient and psychiatrist in regards to actually taking medication as is prescribed. Because patients are most often inherently struggling with basic life functions, taking medication on a daily basis at the same time every day is usually completely unrealistic for them; I myself only started taking my medications at the right time of day, every day, just over a year ago. Everyone I know has been the same with their psychoactive medications – maybe able to take them regularly for 3 days at most, and then falling off the bandwagon for a few days, and the cycle repeats. And then the communication to the psychiatrists is muddled up because patients either assume they've been taking it regularly "enough" in their own minds, or the psychiatrist assumes the patient has been taking them regularly unless the patient explicitly states otherwise. In the latter case, where I myself have expressed to my psychiatrists that I have trouble taking my medication regularly, my psychiatrists stress the importance of taking it regularly and maybe offer some very basic advice that I've already tried and failed at despite my best efforts, and then they forget about it and the next appointment I have to remind them, and it's the same cycle repeated until one of us gives up. And then when I discuss it with my friends who are on psychoactive medications, they're in the former case where they assume missing 3 days of their medications every few days is fine, so I have to remind them too that that is not how they are meant to be taken. So, with all of that said (and remembering that this is obviously my limited anecdotal observations), if this is happening on a larger scale, how reliable is the field of psychiatry right now, if psychiatrists aren't seriously keeping track of whether or not the medications they prescribe are being taken as regularly as they are meant to? What measures are put in place to ensure psychiatrists keep track of these things? How do we know psychiatrists are recording accurate patient results?
Pls Dr answer me can I take 40 mg of Paxile and 75 mg of anafranil in the same time
I heard you talking about therapist that are ready all the therapists I talk to they don't ask me what helps me they just tell me take this antidepressant yes maybe antidepressants help certain people but it does not do good for me mentally and physically I only had one good therapist in my life but he is gone now
Hello Dr. Tracy, i hope u’re doing ok. I’m 21 years old and today i was diagnose with BPD. I’ve been following you for a long time now, and i always suspected about that one and bipolar, or maybe co- morbid (but luckily it’s only bpd for now). From all the symptoms of this disorder, i’m now dealing terribly with addiction. Coffee, nicotine and cannabis are destroying me and idk how to stop. Can you share some tricks to fight the urge of escaping from reality?
I've been suffering from anxiety since I was a child, results from an unstable and abusive childhood. The not knowing, is what scares me
dr Marks your getting better each day!
suicide is the permanent solution, I'm considering it…
Hi Dr. Marks, I know you briefly touched on the neurological condition misophonia (4S, selective sound sensitivity syndrome) in your ASMR video, but I was wondering if you could do a video that shifts the focus onto this condition. I struggle a lot with this. The sounds of forks on plates, breathing, gum chewing, lip and tongue smacking, sniffling, page turning, brushing erasure off a paper and the letter 's' when whistled drive me into a sudden fight or flight response, and I don't know how to articulate just how far from deliberate my responses to these sounds are.
The way you put complex theories across is amazing
I just want to say thank you for not selling out and being one of those corrupt doctors who give out quack treatments and are just saying anything for a dollar and some fame. You are the real deal and give doctors on social media a better name. Plus you’re brilliant at what you do. Keep on 🙂
But a lot of anxiety is caused by being exposed to abuse without recourse to change. If all self employed people were made to work in toxic offices they would all develop anxiety.
you should do a video on dose dependant anti-d as im a slow metabolizer of meds so it builds up quickly in the body the normal doses were toxic
CBT nor meds have helped. I’m getting a lot better with all I’ve learned over the years though.
