Permissive Parenting Examples in Movies
Permissive parenting is a parenting style that is characterized by a lack of rules and structure. It is often seen as a more relaxed approach to parenting, where parents are more likely to give in to their children’s demands and allow them to make their own decisions. While this style of parenting can have its benefits, it can also lead to children feeling a lack of boundaries and guidance. In this article, we will explore some examples of permissive parenting in movies and discuss the potential implications of this parenting style.
What is Permissive Parenting?
Permissive parenting is a parenting style that is characterized by a lack of rules and structure. It is often seen as a more relaxed approach to parenting, where parents are more likely to give in to their children’s demands and allow them to make their own decisions. This style of parenting can be beneficial in some cases, as it can help children to develop independence and self-confidence. However, it can also lead to children feeling a lack of boundaries and guidance, which can lead to behavioral issues.
Examples of Permissive Parenting in Movies
There are many examples of permissive parenting in movies. One example is in the movie “The Parent Trap” (1998). In this movie, the two main characters, Hallie and Annie, are twins who were separated at birth. When they are reunited, they discover that their parents have been divorced for years and that their father, Nick, is a very permissive parent. He allows the girls to do whatever they want and rarely sets any rules or boundaries. This leads to the girls feeling a lack of guidance and structure, which leads to them getting into trouble.
Another example of permissive parenting in movies is in the movie “Matilda” (1996). In this movie, Matilda’s parents are very neglectful and permissive. They allow her to do whatever she wants and rarely set any rules or boundaries. This leads to Matilda feeling a lack of guidance and structure, which leads to her getting into trouble.
Potential Implications of Permissive Parenting
While permissive parenting can have its benefits, it can also lead to some potential implications. For example, children who are raised in a permissive environment may struggle to develop self-discipline and may have difficulty following rules and regulations. Additionally, they may struggle to develop a sense of responsibility and may be more likely to engage in risky behaviors.

Great film but i disagree that permissive parenting has to be as dramatic. There is a fine balance between being permissive parent and allowing a child to embrace their full potential by encouraging them to make choices. You can be a permissive parent and yet have a clean child that has a healthy diet and a healthy sense of self worth. Certainly don't think being a real life permissive parent means playing the role of the character Adam Sandler plays. If we lets say switched Adam Sandler character with a character that is a content and independent parent with healthier lifestyle and choices then there is nothing at all wrong with allowing a child to express themselves fully from a young age.
I don't agree with letting the child act disorderly in school but when permissing parenting is done effectively and within boundaries I believe that child will lead a healthier and content life that its peers.
Great video!! I am realizing that I am too a permissive parent. This resulted in my 16 year old son doing poorly in school, getting into trouble with the law, and bothering other people. He exhibits risky behaviors and make poor choices. He recently had to go to a mental hospital for psych evaluation due to suicidal ideation. I learned that I became that kind of parent from my own abusive childhood so I tend to lean more towards avoidance in dealing with issues. Ever since he came back from the clinic, I have imposed some limitations on past privileges and teaching him to make better choices. He has relapsed a few times in making bad decisions since then but I continue to have to steer him into the right path with help from medication and therapy. Life is all about living and learning.
I think my mom Is a bit Permissive. If i get in trouble or something she just Yells at me and tells me not to do it again. If i ask something from the store she usually buys it for me.
Great Video!!!
Great video to watch! Thanks! 😊😊
Hahaha Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka is a classic scene! 🙂
Those clips totally make the point. I always empowered my Son to make his own decisions, but somehow I managed to also instill manners and consideration in him. He's 27 now, I have no idea how I did it.
Love the video clips, but it is also very disturbing. I work in a mental health ER and often see kids who have never really be parented.
LOVE IT! No better way than learning Permissive Examples than movie clips! And of course my favorite is Mean Girls! Thanks for making this video.
I haven’t seen this movie and glad I haven’t lol. I would be so frustrated with it. Excellent way to demonstrate permissive parenting!
You give really good advice. I really like the movie clips.
Great video, Again !! Really enjoy the part where it shows the little boy (in New York) messing up with everything… Dad isn't a little guilty about his son's behaviour?
