Parenting Styles: Scout O’Donnell at TEDxTheMastersSchool
Parenting is one of the most important and challenging roles that a person can take on. It is a lifelong journey that requires patience, understanding, and a willingness to learn and grow. Parenting styles can vary greatly from family to family, and it is important to understand the different approaches and how they can affect a child’s development.
Scout O’Donnell is a parenting expert and the founder of the Parenting with Scout blog. She recently gave a TEDx talk at The Masters School in New York City, where she discussed the different parenting styles and how they can affect a child’s development.
What is the Difference Between Parenting Styles?
O’Donnell explains that there are four main parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved. Authoritative parenting is characterized by high expectations, clear boundaries, and a warm and supportive environment. Authoritarian parenting is characterized by strict rules and a lack of warmth. Permissive parenting is characterized by low expectations and a lack of boundaries. Uninvolved parenting is characterized by a lack of involvement and a lack of interest in the child’s development.
How Do Parenting Styles Affect a Child’s Development?
O’Donnell explains that each parenting style can have a different effect on a child’s development. Authoritative parenting is associated with higher self-esteem, better academic performance, and better social skills. Authoritarian parenting is associated with lower self-esteem, poorer academic performance, and poorer social skills. Permissive parenting is associated with higher levels of risk-taking behavior and lower levels of self-control. Uninvolved parenting is associated with higher levels of depression and anxiety.
What Are the Benefits of Authoritative Parenting?
O’Donnell explains that authoritative parenting is the most beneficial for a child’s development. It is associated with higher self-esteem, better academic performance, and better social skills. It also encourages independence and self-regulation. Children who are raised with authoritative parenting are more likely to be successful in school and in life.
What Are the Benefits of Other Parenting Styles?
O’Donnell explains that each parenting style has its own benefits. Authoritarian parenting can help children learn to follow rules and respect authority. Permissive parenting can help children learn to be independent and self-reliant. Uninvolved parenting can help children learn to be self-sufficient and resilient.

I find this video extremely condescending. Sociologists don’t know why students are not performing very well. not every parent does their children’s applications some kids are calm because they’ve given up and they have depression not because he had helicopter parents. There’s a lot of holes in her argument. I like what she’s putting down or trying to, but at the same time no one knows anyone else in there is a not a very well understood reason as to why kids in college are feeling so much depression, anxiety so on and so forth.
Brilliant Ted Talk!🙌
Excellent!
🔥🔥🔥
“I’m 18 and an expert on parenting bc of my singular experience being raised”
She talked like an 8 year olds presentation
How many kids does this chick have? Garrantee, zero. Thought this was meant to be on [parenting styles.. not just a general assumption that everyone but her own parents has the same parenting style……. I accept some of her points but also wonder if she could have benefitted a little more emotional support as a young child….
By focusing on your upbringing alone you're overlooking things like genetics, poverty, geographic location, lack of family support, lack of healthcare, lack of available child development resources, lack of mental health resources, etc.
Child development is multifaceted.
We all have had our challenges.
I thought this talk was excellent and I took a lot from it. But that's because I fell in love with the 'idea' of the perfect parenting. Reading the negative comments was actually a huge relief. My parents were not perfect. I am not a perfect mother but I am a good one. Cheers to all the parents doing their best in whatever circumstances you are in, whoever you are 🙂 Variety is what makes the world great.

Parenting is NOT about controling the kids.
"Scout"? Seriously?
She was very knowledgeable! This is what I will share with my clients in our responsible parenting lesson❤️
So, because I'm bad at smalltalk I'll never find a job? lol
I’m so confused at all of the negative comments, I thought this was great
Is she a parent?
Great to hear from someone who knows everything about a subject they know nothing about. She went to “running through the fields” university.
I can provide you with a link to a female therapist who is on her 3rd marriage due to having your style. I feel sorry for you.
What everyone seems to be afraid to mention is that children don’t have to stay with their parents from the time that they can get up and crawl. Anyone will take a child into their arms and care for them because their irresistible and no one can give up the opportunity to care for a child. They should go to only the ones that love the most. Even if a child was one years old and crawled right out their parents front door there would be someone to take care of them. There would be no caveats or restrictions other than the ones that capitalists place upon a child rearing and the current fascitisation we are seeing.
OMG Im so unique, Im not like the other silly millenials and their participation trophies.
This was massively patronising and insufferable. Totally emblematic of the right wing's misbelief that only they have character.
I played have danced since I could walk, played soccer, field hockey, basketball, played the flute, and cheer….. but I still love to read books 😭 so this ted talk is my least fav
This talk is ❤
