Landscaping Mistakes that Lead to More Maintenance
Landscaping is an important part of any home or business. It can add beauty and value to a property, as well as provide a place for people to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Unfortunately, many people make mistakes when it comes to landscaping that can lead to more maintenance and higher costs. Here are some of the most common landscaping mistakes that can lead to more maintenance and how to avoid them.
Not Planning Ahead
One of the most common landscaping mistakes is not planning ahead. Many people rush into landscaping projects without considering the long-term implications. This can lead to costly mistakes that require more maintenance and repairs down the line. Before beginning any landscaping project, it is important to plan ahead and consider the future needs of the property.
Using the Wrong Plants
Another common mistake is using the wrong plants for the climate and soil conditions. Many people choose plants that are not suited for their area, which can lead to more maintenance and higher costs. It is important to research the plants that are best suited for the climate and soil conditions of the area before planting.
Not Considering Maintenance Needs
Many people also fail to consider the maintenance needs of their landscaping. This can lead to more maintenance and higher costs in the long run. It is important to consider the maintenance needs of the plants and other elements of the landscaping before beginning the project.
Not Taking Care of the Soil
Another mistake that can lead to more maintenance is not taking care of the soil. Healthy soil is essential for healthy plants, and it is important to make sure the soil is well-drained and has the right nutrients for the plants. Failing to take care of the soil can lead to more maintenance and higher costs.
Not Pruning Properly
Pruning is an important part of landscaping, but many people fail to prune properly. This can lead to more maintenance and higher costs. It is important to prune plants correctly to ensure they stay healthy and look their best.

Great points. Being a landscape designer I agree with what you're saying.
I’d like to add one thing about lawns, I just got the husqvarna automower this year and it’s amazing! I got so much time to take care of the rest of the garden now! Thanks for the tips about shrubs as a base!
New sub. I like your video style! Very nice. Thanks!
2:28 is just STUNNING
Thank you for this as I learn to garden (and plan a garden) for the first time of ever having one!
I'm fairly new to your channel. I love your videos. They're packed with practical guidance!
If you haven't already, would you consider doing a video on how to deal with the issues that come with bird feeding in your yard? How to deal with the weeds and sprouting that comes from the bird seed that falls from the feeders onto the ground below. What type of ground cover is best on which to install shepherd hooks with bird feeders — bare dirt, pea gravel (is that safe for birds), rocks, grass? Thank you!
Saying removing your lawn so that you wont have to mow, is like saying dont ever eat or drink so that u dont have to wash dishes… lawn is the centrepiece of any landscape
Great video! My favorite was focusing on shrubs. Great advice!
I've never done gardening before besides planting random flowers (snap dragons) in my flower bed. I didn't know there was a way to prevent weeds from growing! (Mulching) thanks for the tips
Great ,thanks
Use mulch glue for the rocks. They'll stay in place. 😊
She lies,….nothing is free it’s a con to pay $249.00. STOP CONNING people Eve!,,
I love your video! At the time stamp 2:19 what kind of shrub is that purple one on the right?
Hello Eve, I would like to ask a question. I have two large banks in front of my house, next to the street that get full sun. In the area where I live, Blue Rug Juniper grows very well. I would love to plant some to take over these areas. These banks have sporadic clumps of grass mingled with some clover and a lot of crab grass. My question is this: do I have to dig out all the crab grass in order for the juniper ground cover to be able to spread? Thank you so much for your very helpful videos. I am enjoying them very much.
New to the field… haha no pun intended but thanks for making the basics easy to understand
I hope that you put samples of those plants that we put in that you describe which grows as such. New homeowner here.
Do I need to use, should I use, landscaping fabric? I'd rather not incur the extra expense if I am going to use a healthy layer of mulch.
My number 1 rule is you have maintenance on the house. Work around that trail so your garden does not get destroyed.
wow. glad I stumbled onto you. I purchased a rural property (not so easy to find landscapers here) and I now miss my old landscaper terribly…. I am 100% on my own trying to figure this out. some successes, some failures, but trying to get there. Thank you for this video.
Great video!
Agree with all these. Tho if you don't like mowing, get a robot mower and design to maximise its benefits (eg having an edging that allows the mower to drive on, rather than a vertical edge/wall where it'll leave an unmowed gap).
Great tips! Happy to hear the encouragement of native plants – there are so many to choose from that behave just like any other plant that you can buy from the garden centre – and sometimes even easier! Looking forward to learning more from you 😃
