How To Decorate Scandinavian
Scandinavian design is a style of interior design that originated in the Nordic countries of Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. It is characterized by minimalism, functionality, and simplicity. Scandinavian design is often associated with modern, contemporary, and mid-century modern styles. It is also known for its use of natural materials, such as wood, stone, and metal.
Scandinavian design is all about creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere in your home. It is a style that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Here are some tips on how to decorate your home in a Scandinavian style.
Choose Neutral Colors
When it comes to Scandinavian design, neutral colors are key. Choose colors such as white, gray, beige, and black. These colors will create a calming and relaxing atmosphere in your home. You can also add a pop of color with accent pieces such as pillows, rugs, and artwork.
Incorporate Natural Materials
Natural materials are an essential part of Scandinavian design. Wood is a popular choice for furniture and flooring. You can also use stone, such as marble or granite, for countertops and backsplashes. Metal is also a great choice for lighting fixtures and hardware.
Add Textiles
Textiles are an important part of Scandinavian design. Choose fabrics such as wool, linen, and cotton for upholstery and curtains. These fabrics will add warmth and texture to your home. You can also add rugs and throws to add color and pattern to your space.
Include Greenery
Plants are a great way to add life to your home. Choose plants that are easy to care for, such as succulents and cacti. You can also add larger plants, such as ferns and palms, to create a lush and inviting atmosphere.
Incorporate Artwork
Artwork is an important part of Scandinavian design. Choose artwork that is simple and minimalistic. You can also add wall hangings and sculptures to add texture and interest to your space.
Add Lighting
Lighting is an important part of Scandinavian design. Choose lighting fixtures that are simple and functional. You can also add candles and lamps to create a cozy atmosphere.

You may have noticed my background is a little different in this video! We had a burst pipe in my old apartment 😭 and we are in an Airbnb for a couple of months. So the house tour I had planned is put on hold until the new year! Sorry folks! ❤️
Why am I just finding you? You explain everything so well. Building my forever home (love FLW) but still want warm spaces. Thank you!
It looks so cold, i don't get the warm vibe from it at all
Since this is for a place that's cold and has very less lighting, shoudnt we use warm lighting too? I saw a few pictures u showed of very bright light color lighting and I feel like it would be a lot more beneficial to use comfortable and warm artificial sunlight that kind of matches the sun light color? Like linen, brown, orange, beige type of lights
Teak & marble
I used to be an Ikea fan girl. Ivar units all over the place! Pine dining room set, etc. etc. It all became horribly orange after 25 years or so.
Me being from scandinavia, not realizing we had a 'scandi' style, just thinking this was ✨the✨ style
Thank you so much for creating incredible videos! You deserve a million subscribers!
Interesting and helpful video, thank you.
What about my Danish rosewood (so it’s medium dark) with original strong orange upholstery? Certainly not a neutral or pastel.
One of my favorite IKEA pieces was the Ivar, however, the new shelf design could have been an upgrade being metal over the original plastic, however, poorly executed so it’s a downgrade (not secured in the wood and no internal bracing as before so now the shelves bounce and deflect).
I’m looking for an interior designer for my apartment, do you design apartment?
I've always loved Sandnavian design. I'm adopted but my adoptive father is Finnish and visiting my grandparents home as a kid I just loved it. It was so beautiful the Finnish traditional style. My Ukki made his own furniture, all wood, he even built the house all on his own.
I have dark wooden kitchen cabinets with matching wall trim. Can I use that color to make this style? I see that light colors are used more often than not but I’m wondering if this look can be achieved with what I have without having to paint or replace the cabinets
Watching this as a Scandinavian really shows how subjective "traditional" is, because of course we find the Scandinavian design aesthetic to be classic and traditional here. XD
Still loving the video!
Watching this whole playlist to figure out what kind of style I even currently have in my home😄So far I think I'm somewhere between Scandinavian and Boho? Lots of simple wooden furniture + a few thrifted and diy elements and colourful wall art. Thanks for helping me sort of put a name to it so I can buildl on that! 🙃
Thank. Terrific info on design. I have a typical condo gas fireplace and would like to make it more scandi. Would love to see what you could do with affordable fireplace redesign
I love the way you explain
I love Scandinavia style, my grandmas family was from southern Sweden. But I also love
Color and mid century so I am trying to use both of those, lol
This is so informative! Building our house and I’m going for Scandinavian decor! Also my kitchen bedroom wardrobe and bathroom is IKEA
2:33 this is exactly why I like Scandinavian style. I think minimal furniture and white colour palette makes home look clean and sharp.
I currently live with my parents since I’m a teen and this home is so traditional, packed and cluttered all around. It makes me stressed and since Im in charge of cleaning things I’m never satisfied with how it looks 😭
So are the main differences between boho & Scandinavian style is color palette & simplicity?
ITS COLOR NOT COLOUR
This style confuses me. If it really started in cold climates then why tile or wood flooring? Also, the chairs and tables look cold, not warm. Strange . . .
The Scandi style is an interesting approach. Very different from the Spanish. More interesting than the French. I still think I prefer the Sicilian.
I love Scandinavian Style quite a bit. Especially tables and chairs, shelving, consoles, dressers… but at the same time I love big leather sofas and armchairs, traditional side tables along with a large ottoman to get that cosy feel. We do not have carpet or rugs just wooden flooring as it’s easier to stay clean..and no, we do not wear shoes inside the house, just slippers or warm socks. The bedroom is IKEA dressers and a queen bed. The bed has a duvet with cotton covers that we wash once a week with our pillow cases and flat sheet which covers the mattress, as we do not use a “Top Sheet”. Therefore, what type of style would you say I have in my home?
Surprised you didn’t mention Danish store Bo Concept in the video, although they are on the pricey side, so maybe that’s why not?
We decorate just like how we dress: muted, simple, practical, easy to combine. Showing off is a cardinal sin here 😉 (at least here in Finland 🇫🇮), so bold colors and catching people's attention is often considered "a bit too much" psychologically and socially. Natural elements and the simplicity of the furnitures comes from the fact we traditionally used to make everything by ourselves, like you wouldn't have time and/or skill to decorate everything excessively. Full floor carpet has never been a thing here. Traditionally we've made rag rugs from old clothes (or even further back in history, dried hay or fur on the wooden floor). Most people here consider full floor carpets extremely impractical and unhygienic and wouldn't want them to their homes. Last but not least, we do use curtains lol. When it's literally pitch black nearly around the clock outside (seriously, in the mid winter sun is up just few hours a day, and further north it doesn't rise at all), it feels nice to hide it sometimes and just have your small warm well-lighted "nest" inside. But simply to have fabrics and furnitures with light colors, makes the space feel more light without the natural sunlight. Candles are the absolute must during the polar nights!
Thank you, thank you so much Nick. I appreciate this entire series of design styles. I have been lost until now.
I am happy to say that after watching your videos, I’ve discovered my style 😍 is mostly Scandinavian with some Mid Century Modern into it. 🙏🏼🙏🏼😍😍
By the way I found you through one of Arvin’s video’s where you made a sassy comment. 🤭😄🤣💚💋
So l love Scandinavian design and want to implement it in my home but unfortunately my kitchen cabinets are dark wood and I can’t change them because I’m a renter. Can I still achieve the Scandinavian vibe
Bo Concept is a good store too.
I’m guessing my style is Scandinavian 👁👄👁;!
Maximize light!!!
" I don't care for children" 😂😂, you cracked me up there! I love your style in design as well as the way you do your videos. Straight shooter!
Wood floors are warm. Tile is cold. Also a lot of people have underfloor heating… I have wood flooring and rugs.. Just the normal heating pipes running under the floors to the radiators keeps it warm.
I use bordeaux, bottle green, midnight blue.. And have scandinavian style.. It works great
Blending Scandinavian & MCM together creates a warm, inviting & interesting look if balanced properly. Scandi can appear bland, but add a MCM rug or art work and you now have pizazz!
I found this video was the best and most informative one I previewed on YouTube.
