Sustainable Fashion: The New Luxury | Marina Spadafora | TEDxLaRomana
Sustainable fashion is a growing trend in the fashion industry, and Marina Spadafora is one of the leading voices in the movement. In her TEDxLaRomana talk, Spadafora discusses the importance of sustainable fashion and how it can be a new form of luxury.
Spadafora begins her talk by discussing the current state of the fashion industry. She notes that the industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world, and that it is responsible for 10% of global carbon emissions. She also points out that the industry is largely driven by fast fashion, which is characterized by low-cost, low-quality clothing that is produced quickly and often discarded shortly after purchase.
Spadafora then goes on to discuss the importance of sustainable fashion. She argues that sustainable fashion is not only better for the environment, but it is also a form of luxury. She explains that sustainable fashion is made with higher-quality materials and is designed to last longer than fast fashion. She also notes that sustainable fashion is often more expensive than fast fashion, but that it is worth the investment because it is better for the environment and will last longer.
Spadafora then goes on to discuss the importance of consumer education when it comes to sustainable fashion. She argues that consumers need to be educated about the environmental and social impacts of their fashion choices. She also notes that consumers need to be aware of the different materials and production processes used in sustainable fashion.
Finally, Spadafora discusses the importance of supporting sustainable fashion brands. She argues that consumers should support brands that are committed to sustainability and ethical production. She also notes that consumers should be willing to pay a premium for sustainable fashion, as it is a form of luxury.
Overall, Spadafora’s TEDxLaRomana talk is an inspiring and informative look at the importance of sustainable fashion. She makes a compelling argument for why sustainable fashion is a form of luxury and why consumers should be willing to pay a premium for it. Her talk is a great reminder of the importance of supporting sustainable fashion brands and educating consumers about the environmental and social impacts of their fashion choices.

After watching this video, whenever I see clothing ads on Facebook, I comment on the ad post with the following: "Before I buy, I have a few questions: Who makes these clothes? Are they being paid fair living wages? Are the fabrics made from sustainable materials? And what happens to these clothes if they don't sell? Does the company dump them in a landfill so they can't be resold and instead kill our planet faster? 🤔" Some brands ignore my comment, some respond with an auto-generated message that doesn't answer my questions. But a few will actually engage with me and share what they're doing and take my feedback back to their companies. Depending on how the brands respond determines which brands I support. I encourage everyone to join me in this simple act so together, we can boost the demand signal for transparency in this market! 💕
Yes Y and Z generations want change and a sustainable approach to fashion, but cannot afford it and are forced into fast fashion. This is a great first step initiative though
