End of Year Homeschool Update
As the school year comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the homeschooling journey we’ve been on. It’s been a year of ups and downs, successes and failures, and a lot of learning. We’ve tried out different curriculums, activities, and approaches to learning, and now it’s time to take a look back and see what worked and what didn’t.
What Worked
One of the biggest successes of the year was our use of online learning tools. We found that our children responded well to the structure and interactivity of online learning platforms. We used a variety of tools, including Khan Academy, ABCmouse, and IXL, and our children were able to learn and practice a variety of skills. We also found that our children enjoyed the challenge of completing online lessons and earning rewards for their efforts.
We also had success with hands-on activities. We found that our children responded well to activities that allowed them to explore and discover. We used a variety of materials, including art supplies, science kits, and building materials, to create projects and activities that were both educational and fun. Our children enjoyed the freedom to explore and create, and we were able to use these activities to reinforce the concepts they were learning.
What Didn’t Work
One of the biggest challenges we faced this year was finding the right balance between structure and freedom. We found that our children needed structure in order to stay focused and on task, but too much structure was stifling and made learning less enjoyable. We tried to find a balance between structure and freedom, but it was a challenge to find the right balance.
We also struggled to find the right curriculum for our children. We tried a variety of curriculums, but none of them seemed to fit our children’s needs. We found that some curriculums were too advanced for our children, while others were too basic. We eventually settled on a combination of online learning tools and hands-on activities, but it took some trial and error to find the right combination.
Conclusion
Overall, we had a successful year of homeschooling. We found that our children responded well to online learning tools and hands-on activities, and we were able to find the right balance between structure and freedom. We also learned that finding the right curriculum is a process of trial and error, and that it’s important to be flexible and willing to try new things.

I pray y'all are having an amazing end of year! How have y'all been celebrating the end of the homeschool year? ❤️
We had the same situation for math but for level 1. Math with Confidence has been the best switch I've ever made with homeschooling! I've learned to bring the manipulatives we need for that lesson out before we start. Helps me be more organized. For the games, maybe he could play with one of the older siblings so you could have a break some days?
My 8 yr old daughter has been going TGTB Math 2 this year and about halfway through it became a struggle! Clocks, money, skip counting…..it felt like it didn't give enough problems to really go deep enough for her to master before moving on to a new concept (I know it's spiral!) And I keep telling her she will be learning these concepts over again and again, but it's still been frustrating for her.
Same recommendation for Math with Confidence. I think the spiral approach but teaching concepts in units is very good. I had a hard time with TGTB Math when I saw how the lessons on each concept are scattered through the year instead of clumping them together. A friend of mine had the same problem with her daughter.
I like that the manual is easy to follow, and each lesson is short. The manuals I've had in other curriculum are much more challenging to follow.
I love TGATB language arts. We used Math with Confidence for kindergarten and I really liked it, although we did not care for the following grades and switched to Saxon. One of my children also needs a spiral approach and plenty of repetition. Saxon Math is our winner, in fact all of my kids are using Saxon now. I imagine we will continue with Saxon throughout our homeschooling journey.
I loved hearing your update! I wanted to see if you've seen this about reading eggs? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiR87mH-VZU
I missed your videos! I feel the same about the math! She is in first grade. We are currently using big math book 1-2 grade. I'm thinking about using the older version math of the good and the beautiful. YEEES! for Youtube shorts, I don't have Instagram.
Math with Confidence is the best!!! Stick with it until you get used to it, but it is wonderful. I have siblings play the games together, and they all learn!
How do you handle moving around and how often do you have to move? 😮
I can't even imagine 😨
Thank you so much for sharing! We absolutely love The Good and The Beautiful Language Arts but didn’t even make it two lessons with their Math. We switched to Singapore Math Dimensions and could not have asked for a better curriculum!
I had the HARDEST time with math with my 8/9 yo this year, and we started grades over too. We bought the wrap ups and printed out worksheets. Totally get you.
I started her on Christian Light Education today and it has great repetition and confidence building and no teachers manual needed for the new concepts – it’s pretty much self-taught in their little units!
So happy to see your beautiful face show up on my feed. This video has been encouraging as always!!! ❤️
Worksheets Work
I'd love you to do a video about subscription boxes 😁
Bit the bulllet?! Maybe 😆
I'm so glad that I'm not in that same predicament alone! Being halfway through. My son has ASD and ADHD, he's got a 5 second attention span it seems, most days. 🥴 Makes working with him incredibly challenging and certainly a test of patience! 😂
Love new content from you! I will be checking out RAR premium! You may want to do some searching in YT land for some recent Reading eggs news.. I have been a long time subscriber of theirs but I think I am cancelling that. Which I hate because like you said its a great program!
You should check out the Practice Makes Perfect suplemental books that Masterbooks offers for their math. You can check out samples on their website, although not as lengthy of a sample as the good and the beautiful offers. It might be a good oprion to supplement with. It might be similar to what you are using.
The 2nd grade math is in my cart for next year. Do you think you need the teacher manual in order to teach the lessons?
We use math mammoth and is a spiral curriculum lots of review and memory my daughter absolutely likes it and no teacher manual needed self explanatory!
That's the great thing about Homeschooling…you can cater the education to the student. We like TGATB Language arts, but not the Handwriting and we really enjoy Math With Confidence, but I don't really spend that much time in the teacher's manual. I feel like a lot of it is the background behind the method, and it's not really necessary at the kindergarten level. But there are lots of review and short games as warm-ups, which my daughter loves (most of the time, lol; she hates to lose).
Be A U Ti Ful, Wed Nes Day…….every time 😂
We struggled with the good and the beautiful math as well 😔 We switched to Math With Confidence and wanted to love it but the games and gathering all of the materials each day was kind of too much for me as a mom to 4 so I tried out Math Mammoth and that is our winner! It makes them approach math concepts in multiple ways which I love. It is more of a mastery approach that adds in review. Hope you guys find what works best for your son! Math 🤪
TGTB math 3 also did not work for our family, the musical multiplication facts did not stick because if we struggled to remember the words to the song, she couldn’t remember the facts even with daily practice. The lessons only covered it for a few lessons in the beginning of the book then nothing on multiplication for over 40 lessons. We will not be using their math going forward.
I don't like teacher's manuals either lol 😅 thanks for sharing mama!
We have been on ESA for 3 years and it’s been the biggest blessing for our family! I pray other states start to implement ESAs as well
It's nice to hear from you and your family❤
I have a love and hate relationship with Math with confidence. I use it with my 1st and 2nd grader but my gosh I’m just like you i do not like teachers manuals especially when they come like that. The teacher’s Manuel was quite overwhelming for me at first. Now I prep by reading and highlighting the teachers manual for the upcoming week to make sure I know what’s coming. Also having to play the games for every lesson is still a bit of a drag for me. I am teaching 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade with a toddler that’s a limitless soldier and it gets chaotic. Needless to say, that I’ve had to save math lessons for when my toddler naps to be able to get them done. I haven't looked elsewhere since my daughters are grasping the concepts and learning so well due to the mastery and spiral approach. It is a solid program and I will always recommend it. Blessings!!
I’m with you on teachers manuals. I need them to be more cut and dry 😅
Do they do spelling or is that combined with language arts thanks
Thanks same hear needed that extra ? for 2nd grade math. The clock, adding double digits
I get you about the Math With Confidence teacher’s manual 😐But this curriculum is the only math curriculum that is working for us.
